Unveiling the Story of Fort Darnet

Fort Darnet is a historic fort located on a picturesque island in the Medway, offering a unique glimpse into the past.

Fort Darnet was constructed between 1870 and 1872 as part of a major programme of coastal defences designed to protect the River Medway and the vital Chatham Naval Dockyard.

Built during a period of concern over foreign naval expansion and advances in heavy artillery, the fort formed part of a wider chain of defences positioned to command key shipping channels. Construction took approximately two years, with the circular granite structure engineered to support heavy rifled muzzle-loading guns intended to control the main approach along the river.

The fort was originally planned as a two-tier battery, but ground conditions and cost constraints led to a reduced final design. At its peak,it was equipped to mount a battery of eleven rifled muzzle-loading guns, including eight 9-inch and three 7-inch piece

At Fort Darnet, we celebrate a remarkable history while providing a versatile venue for various events, including filming, guided visits, and private occasions. Our unique location has hosted numerous successful events, leaving lasting impressions on all who experience its charm.
