The Story of Fort Darnet
Fort Darnet is a remarkable Victorian sea fort set on an island in the River Medway. Built between 1870 and 1872, it was designed to help protect the approaches to the River Medway and the historic Chatham Naval Dockyard.
Remote, atmospheric and surrounded by water, the fort offers a rare glimpse into Britain’s coastal defence history. Its circular structure, heavy gun positions, flooded chambers and isolated setting give the site a powerful sense of place.

A Fort Built for Defence
Fort Darnet was created during a period of growing concern over foreign naval power and advances in artillery. Together with nearby Hoo Fort, it formed part of an inner defensive line intended to control key routes along the Medway.
The fort was originally planned as a larger two-tier battery, but difficult ground conditions and rising costs led to a reduced final design. It was eventually equipped to support eleven rifled muzzle-loading guns, positioned to defend the main approach along the river.
Although Fort Darnet was never used in battle, its military purpose, island location and surviving structure make it one of the Medway’s most distinctive historic landmarks.
